MARY JENNINGS “MJ” HEGAR is a Purple Heart recipient, and the second women ever to receive the Distinguished Flying Cross with the Valor Device attached. She currently lives in Austin with her family and works as an executive coach and consultant. Hegar gives back to her alma mater by mentoring cadets and guest lecturing at the University of Texas. Hegar recently penned and released SHOOT LIKE A GIRL: One Woman’s Dramatic Fight in Afghanistan and on the Home Front, where she recounts for the first time in print, the hardships—at home in Texas, and on military bases around the world—that brought her to the steps of the federal courthouse. Hegar’s battle on behalf of women in the military captured international media attention. She was named one of Newsweek’s 125 Women of Impact in 2012, and one of Foreign Policy’s Leading Global Thinkers in 2013. She continues writing and speaking about her experiences in the military and her fight for increased military effectiveness through equality. @mjhegar
